The life and cultural happenings of living in Hawaii!

Browsing in life

my boyfriend (olin) and i hit the six-month mark on saturday, and to celebrate, i made him a mix CD!  not as cool as  mixtape, granted, but i don’t even have a cassette player anymore.  anyway, to make things cool, i made a neat cd cover for it, and i think it came out pretty dandy!

Hi all, I’m sorry I haven’t written here in forever.  I finally edited my blog layout to fit in more with my website one, and I’ll try to update this more with news of my art and photography!

Which is my first order of business really; in the past year or so, I have become increasingly more and more interested in photography, rather than illustration.  I’ve been on the phone with one of the very nice admissions representatives from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and I’m planning on going there within a semester or two to study photography!  Right now I’m enrolled at Hawaii Community College with a Liberal Arts major, but I’m taking my first analog photography course, and it’s so exciting! :)  This Thursday, we’re going to learn how to develop our own film!

I’ve also submitted some photos to a lowfi indie analog magazine, shutter skin.  They added me, and I was interested in their project, so hopefully some of my photos will be published in a small scale!  Right now, my main focus is getting my photos out there, so all of my photos on flickr will soon be free to use and reproduce, as long as I am properly credited!  Exciting?  I hope so.  Here’s some of the photos I’ve been taking lately, just so you all can see what I’ve been up to!

Hello, hello! Sorry I haven’t written in a while. Let me recap what new events have transpired.

01. I uploaded all of my photos from Oahu trip that I took in late July!

You can see all of the photos here, at my LiveJournal!

02. I started attending Connections again, and this time, I’ve been sticking with it! This coming week will be my fourth week, and I have only missed one day of school. I’m even taking a Chinese class, which is just about the coolest shit ever. I love my teacher, and I love Chinese. For some reason, even though speaking it is much, much harder than Japanese, I find the language as a whole a lot easier to understand and grasp.

03.I got cast as Lady Macbeth in PALC’s fall production! As far as memorizing my lines goes… ha.. ha. We’ll move on.

04. I shot my friend Kendra’s senior photos. It was my first photoshot ever, so it was very exciting! I also had a lot of fun editing her pictures. I wasn’t as creative with the coloring and editing as I normally would have been, though, because these were senior photos, after all! I thought too much style would have taken away from print quality and all.

You can see the rest of them here! :)

That’s pretty much it! I’m busy with schoolwork, learning my lines, and studying for the October SATs. I promise to update this more, even though not many reads it! I don’t mind. :D I might actually move this blog to a subdirectory, because I am not so sure how I feel about the way I have this domain organized. It feels awfully messy.

I haven’t been up to much lately, other than constantly trying to come up with ideas of things to write here. I am beginning to suspect that I should stop trying so hard. (Really, who reads this anyway?) But anyway, lately, I have been…

  • Listening to Brain Failure, a punk band from Beijing. Yeah, really! Just that fact makes them awesome, but if you give them a listen, you’ll be even more impressed. They sing in both English and Mandarin (not amazing English, but punk singers don’t really have amazing pronunciation anyway! Rock on!), and have performed with THE DROPKICK MURPHYS, THE CASUALTIES, and DILLINGER FOUR. BRAIN FAILURE is also credited with starting the punk movement in China, and is the first Chinese band to tour in the US! Since I like them so much, I uploaded my favorite song of theirs for you to enjoy. It’s a re-release of their song, “Coming Down to Beijing” - this time with cleaner vocals and - drum roll! - featuring Dicky Barret of THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES. You don’t get much cooler thain this.

  • Reading Desolation Jones, a Wildstorm comic by author Warren Ellis (author of Hellstorm and Transmetropolitan) and artist J. H. Williams III (Chase, Promethea). It has all the elements of a good story: cranky British protagonist, cast of quirky characters (including a porno connoisseur named Filthy Sanchez), awesome artwork, and horrific experiments (being forced to stay awake 24/7 for an entire year while being force-fed images of horrific images, anyone?). Pick it up at your local comic book store, if you get a chance! It’s worth it.
  • Re-reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, because honestly, I whipped through it the first time and don’t remember much of anything, except, you know, a certain white-bearded main character dying in some kind of… lake, or something. I figured I should reread it before Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows comes out (on July 21st!) I can’t believe that the Harry Potter series is ending! I remember reading it for the first time in the fourth grade, because my classmate Cameron was and I thought they looked pretty cool. I kind of miss the less gloomy and more school-oriented ways of the first few books, but I suppose war is the only natural course that could be taken with Voldemort and Harry and all.
  • Going through tons and tons of old stuff in preparation for a garage sale my mom and I are having! My mom and I are both going to Oahu for a shopping spree in two weekends (so I won’t be home to pick up my copy of Harry Potter on the opening night :( ), and we decided to hock all our old stuff for a little extra cash! Plus, it’s been about time we freed up some space in the house. My ulterior motive, though, was also to find all my mom’s old photos that I’ve been hearing about but have never seen. We found a few, and I fell in love with them. I love the look and feel of old photos - they all have rounded edges and a matte texture. It feels so amazing to hold them in your hands.

See more of my mom’s photos here!

And that’s all! I’ll see you guys soon. I can’t wait to go to Oahu~

Hello, loves! It’s about time that I caught you all up to speed with my terribly, terribly interesting life. And by ‘terribly, terribly interesting,’ I mean ‘duller than old wallpaper.’

First of all, I should mention that I’m taking driver’s ed! Yeah, pretty sad - I’m seventeen, I’ve had my permit for a year, and I’m only taking driver’s ed now. Well, at least I’m taking it, right? Unfortunately, class is at 8 in the morning, which means I have to wake up around 6:50AM to get all my morning things out of the way (breakfast, pooping, reading the paper, choosing my outfit, feeling sleepy, etc etc). So far, it hasn’t been too much of driver’s ed as it has been “Scaring Young Drivers Out of Driving.” All we’ve done so far is watch videos of people in car crashes being run over, and sharing horror stories about crash victims. I also don’t have any friends at all in my class! All of my classmates are sophomores or from other schools. I saw three of my friends at the orientation, but they’re all in the 10:15AM class. Shitty deal.

There was one point where, on the first day of class, my friend Charles walked in - but after roll call, the teacher determined there was an extra student in the class - and of course, it was Charles. Thanks, life. Now, not having any friends in class is normally not that big of a deal, except that we have to choose partners for BTW (”Behind the Wheel”) driving. We can be in groups of two or three when we actually go driving - so everyone was choosing their friends and I had no one! How depressing! My life is such a sob story.

Secondly: My hair has been pissing me off lately. It used to be a cute Japanese-y layered cut, but it grew out into a mess. I recently found the cure for this, and it is pomps! (Also known as fins.) It’s a greaser-inspired hairdo that’s popular with rockabilly and psychobilly fans! It was my first time ever attempting one, and my bangs aren’t quite long enough to make it as huge as I’d like it to be. But, I have fallen in love with it. For more photos of me rocking my baby pomp, click here!
